I don’t have to tell you what makes these Vermont country stores so special. You can feel their old-timey allure the moment you walk through the door. Each were established with the same goal: to be a one-stop-shop for provisions, household items and necessities, as well as a centralized gathering spot for the community. Some of these Vermont country stores remain more practical, and others have become popular destinations drawing visitors to the quaint towns where they stand. From the echos of historic brick and mortar, come robust online shopping experiences and national catalogs to boot. Most stores on this list are rooted in the 19th century, the oldest being the Putney General Store, which first opened in 1796 and has been rebuilt twice following two devastating fires. Over the last several weeks I’ve made a few visits to Dewey’s Pond in Quechee, Vermont. I went to create images for various landscape and wildlife photo workshops, and out of my joy of trail running and exploring. Dewey’s Pond is a popular spot for fishing, nature walks, birding, boating, and to simply enjoy an idyllic setting of Vermont’s green hills, lily pads, and wildflowers. The peepers were deafening, and I swear the number of eyes staring back at me doubled each time I turned on my headlamp. In the morning the fog rolls off the pond and encircles flocks of Canada geese and ducks. One time I saw a large creche of goslings, and scored a hiss from mother goose. The trail winds down a slip of land that crosses…

With a rare day to myself, I set out on a photo adventure across Vermont and New Hampshire. I began in Bradford, Vermont, crossing over to Haverhill, New Hampshire, followed Route 10 to 302, and landed in Bath. Then I traveled east onto 117 to Sugar Hill. The morning began with a delicious breakfast at 4 Aces Diner in West Lebanon with my husband. I saw two ads on my paper placemat. One for The Brick Store in Bath, and the other for Harman’s Cheese and Country Store in Sugar Hill.  I lived on Goshen Road in Bradford from 2013-2016. Its gorgeous views and weathered structures conjure ghosts of my past living in this area of Vermont that remain in a tender corner of my heart. Here are some shots from the first leg of my trip.
